Norfolk House Hotel London Reviews
2 Nights at the Norfolk House hotel... Apr 18, 2008
Recently, we had to go to London quite suddenly. The availability of reasonably priced hotels was not that great on such short notice. So, we decided to give the Norfolk House hotel a try since it was very near our destination.
I had read reviews, saw photos and made our reservations. It was disappointing to say the least. In general, we are not extremely picky about hotels. Basically, we want a clean room with a comfortable bed, and a clean bathroom, and hope for courteous staff.
The biggest let down was in the service. It was very lacking and almost non-existant. No information was ever volunteered, but later found out by other guests. Forget about someone helping you with your luggage, and forget about an elevator to the higher floors.
The room itself was extremely small, very dated, and an oven. While all of the radiators were closed, it still remained an oven. There was just enough space on either side of the bed to walk sideways. If you were not careful, or half asleep... well then your toes would pay the price.
While the room was relatively clean, I'm pretty sure it has not been painted or updated in the last 20+ years. The bathroom was also pretty clean, but there was no extra toilet paper and no towel rack. Also, it was a very wobblely toilet. The high point was good water pressure in the shower (once you figured out how to use it).
Since the room was an oven, we had to leave the windows open all night. Sadly, we were directly across from a hospital and heard sirens and traffic all night. Also, the walls are paper thin and you hear everything from other rooms. It is only with utter exhaustion that you can finally fall asleep.
Breakfast was included in the price and this was also disappointing. Firstly, the dining room was not clean at all. The table cloths were dirty and the dining room itself looked just as dingy and depressing as our rooms.
Here is where volunteered information from the staff would have been helpful. To get a warm breakfast, you must first walk back up the stairs to the front desk and wait for someone to appear. Here, you must ask for a silly little piece of paper indicating you want a hot breakfast.
Then, you trudge back down the stairs and try to find a worker which you can hand your silly piece of paper to. They walk away without saying a word and you have no idea what happens next.
While you are waiting though, you can toast your own bread in this giant, but ancient looking contraption. You can also get some juice, tea, or coffee.
Finally, a plate comes with a English breakfast. Certainly not the worst food that I have ever eaten, but also not the best either. It was edible. The atmosphere is not one of charm or "relax and stay awhile" in the dining room. We really did not want to linger longer than necessary.
Now, for the plus points of the hotel. It is cheap (we paid 35 pounds a night)! It is conveniently located nearby a bus stop towards London centre. If you injure yourself, you are across the street from a hospital. They have off-road parking (albeit not very much and filled with enormous potholes). They have a small coffee shop & bar downstairs for a nightcap. There is interesting shopping nearby. There were no visible bugs or rodents. The very tiny towels were clean.
If you are going on holiday and want somewhere to stay for a week, I would not recommend this hotel. If you need a place for a night, haven't much money, and just want to lay down... then, you could do worse.
