The country of Laos is situated across from Nong Khai on the northern bank of the Mekong River. The Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge was the first bridge to be built across the lower Mekong, so Nong Khai is a useful gateway to Vientiane, the capital of Laos which is only 20 km away from it.
