Nomads Serpent Cairns Reviews
Large, colorful and convivial hostel Dec 15, 2012
the Nomad's Cairns Serpent is a large backpacker's hostel on the upper part of Lake Street in North Cairns. It's close to the airport but about a ten minutes' drive out of the center. Though this is no problem whatsoever because there's a free shuttle to and from the city at various times throughout the day.
On entering there's a colorful open plan lobby with the reception, the travel shop and a small convenience shop. Behind that, there are computers where you can get on the internet or you can buy wifi access at 4 dollar for 24 hours.
In the back there's the large bar, where you can also get reasonably priced food, including the 3$ backpacker meals. On the other side of the bar, there's a small swimming pool, that was taken over by the aboriginal children. I got the impression there are a few aboriniginal families permanently living at the hostel. The children were playing around the patio all day or in the pool, the women were doing their laundry and cooking... And they did not seem to be travelling. But then again, I might be wrong.
Off the patio there's a large laundry room with 4 coin operated washers and 4 dryers. Washing powder can be bought from reception. Next to it is a large kitchen with plenty of microwaves and lockers to store food.
We did not stay in a dorm but in a twin, that was located right across from the kitchen and laundry room. So yes it did get extremely noisy.
The room was brightly colored but sparsely furnished. It had two single beds, a desk, a bedside table and two small lockers. Since we paid for a twin, bedlinnens and towels were provided too. It looked more like a budget hotel room, more than a hostel. The room had airco but it could only be controlled from reception. Just mentioning you want it on is enough and it is taken care of.
Breakfast was also included in our fare and consisted of a cup of tea or coffee and two pieces of toast with either jam or vegemite. It's not much, but at least you won't have to start the day on an empty stomach.
