The Fat Camel Hostel...
Stupid name, but that's why I stayed there, plus they have a bar which I always find is the easiest way to meet people when you arrive alone in a new city. Fortunately the bar is very cheap and everyone is really friendly. There seem to be a lot of long termers staying at the hostel but for once they were open to meeting new people and welcome you into the fold straight away. (I hate those hostels where the longtermers think they own the place!!)
The hostel is fairly unique because of its apartment style setup. They've got loads of kitchens (8 I think) because each 4 or 5 rooms share kitchen and bathroom facilities and a small chillout area.
I really enjoyed my time here and would especially recommend it to solo travellers on a budget (it's dirt cheap!).
If you want somewhere romantic - go elsewhere!!!

Fat Camel is an appropriate name - greedy, impersonal hostel that charges for the smallest extras. No window in room, boiling hot with a fan that didn't work. It's run along with a bar and it feels like living in one. Oh, and the staff are useless. Avoid.

Cheapest backpackers I found anywhere in New Zealand actually. (As long as you are lucky enough to get the budget rooms). And you get free food every night (not huge but it's free so you can't really grumble)
Staff are fun and helpful and thankfully they don't charge for things like linen (although you do have to make your own bed if you stay in a dorm room)
