Guesthouse in Malingcong Jul 14, 2008
It is an interesting challenge to find the guesthouse in Malingcong. There is no phone number in any guidebook - there is no address either. When you get to the town there is no sign anywhere indicating there is a guesthouse around. The building look like the other houses in town. Hence you got no change of finding this place by yourself. You will need to ask someone to get you to the guesthouse.
The guesthouse is located on the main street to Malingcong just before you get to the end of the road. And it is next to a house with a red roof. Luckily everybody in town seems to know where the guesthouse is hence you can pretty much ask anybody.
There is only one room available but that's not really a big problem because the busyness is pretty slow and has been slow the last couple of years. According to the guestbook at the place a lot more people came by in the period 1998 to 2002 after this the number of visitors have dropped dramatically. I suspect a change in the guidebooks for the Philippines is responsible for this drop in the number of tourists in town - but you will need old copies of Lonely Planet and Rough Guide to investigate this.
The room at the place is fine with two beds hence you can travel a few people and still fit in. The shower and toilet is basic but function just as you would like it to.
The problem in town is you can not get anything to eat anywhere. Hence you will need to bring your own supplies or try to get the woman of the house to cook some stuff for you. She is a decent cook and does well with the produce from the family's fields. Hence you can eat a full meal at this place - but do expect to be served the same for both dinner and breakfast.
