Hotel Nikko Kume Island now Resort Hotel Kume Island Feb 20, 2005
Hotel Nikko Kume Island is now Resort Hotel Kume Island which is on a small island in the Okianwa Prefecture and part of the Ryukyu Island chain. This is a total resort hotel with a large swimming pool, par-3 golf course, driving range, outdoor theater, and tennis courts, but is about a block inland from the beach. It is fairly expensive at $250-$280 per night (25,000 Yen-28,000 Yen) even during the off-season.

The staff was very friendly and the room was adequate for our 2-night stay to see this unusual island with 5-sided pentagon-shaped rock formations along the beach and get away for the weekend off of the main island of Okinawa. There is also a large facility open to the public for sea turtle (Japanese "kame") research about 2 km from the hotel.

We did not use many of the amenities of the hotel, but used the central location for day-trips and walking to sights along the beach. The hotel was not crowded at all and the staff was currious to see Americans during the off-season during President's Day (February) weekend in 2005. The weather was aweful and the flight over from Naha in Okinawa was very turbulent that time of the year, but we still made the best of it by staying at the Hotel Nikko Kume Island which is now under new management as Resort Hotel Kume Island. We have not stayed here since this change, but it is probably similar as there is not much new construction on these small Japanese Islands. There are also ferry boats which take a few hours to reach from Naha Port, but that also is affected by the weather. Recommend coming out in spring or early fall to visit Kume Island.

If you really want to get "away from it all" Resort Hotel Kume Island is the place to stay if you can get to Kume Island safely from Okinawa!
