Night Market Kota Kinabalu Reviews
Night Market Feb 28, 2012
Kota Kinabalu market is a great place to eat at night. There are a lot of places to eat there, but the main attraction is the barbecue fish. There are a great many stalls with lots of different kinds of fish, and you basically point at the fish and they cook it for you. Some of the fish comes in spicy sauce, but for the most part it's just grilled.
There are condiments on the tables. There are bottles of spicy sauce, chilly, salt and limes to make your own blend to dip the fish in. There are also plastic teapots that you use to wash your hands, and beer and soda in cans.
Night Markets are a central part of the Asian experience, and I have to admit I've not been to enough of them yet. So I don't know how this compares to others. But this was brilliant fun and brilliant food. I know that people are nervous about both street food and fish when abroad, so there are some tips to look out for.
For a start, look for a busy cafe rather than a quiet one. Fresh fish is glossy and has bright eyes - if the fish is dull or slimy skip that stall. And fresh fish never has a smell that makes you feel ill - fresh fish sometimes smells of the ocean and sometimes faintly of fish, but it should never have a strong bad fish smell. All the fish I saw met those standards. I think this is a great place to get food in the evening.
