Nieuwkoop Vacation Guide
Nieuwkoop, is not only nature, but also culture, art, museums and artisan trades ! Well-known artists from the ''Haagse School'' such as Weissenbruch, Gabriƫl and Stortenbeker discovered Nieuwkoop and the Nieuwkoop's lakes at the end of the 19th century. They came and lived or stayed here temporarily in places such as 't Vliegend Paard.
Much of the history of Nieuwkoop we can thankfully still show you! The parish of Nieuwkoop had in the past hundreds of forges, but now there are only a few large businesses/industries left.
In the Smederij museum (Forge museum) you can see how the artisans used to practice their trade.
Originally the Nieuwkoop's lakes were a peat-bog area. A large amount of peat was dug out. The trade in peat was an important source of income for the population of the area. In the Polder museum a large collection of implements used by the peat-cutters, the reed-cutters, the moss-pluckers and also by the hunters and fishermen is shown.
Are you nostalgic? Then you must visit the Museum "Van Alles en Nog Wat'' ("This, that and the other'') ! A large collection of household-equipment, typewriters, a dentists bus, a fire-engine, etc. are shown. You just can't imagine what is to see there.
Nieuwkoop is quite small and lengthend town. It's not really a city to go shopping, however the museums as described go well with a walk by the lakes.
