YD9 - Yorkshire? yes. Dale? yes BUT Oct 31, 2010
The BUT, for some unimaginable reason to ordinary folk, is that it does not fall within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. That makes it harder for me than any of the other dales to know where to start and stop - but, cheating or not, I must give a mention to the lovely town of Knaresborough, seen as the subject for many jigsaw puzzles.

The Nidd starts up on the moors and flows through some pleasant villages to the little town of Pateley Bridge. Near Lofthouse is How Stean Gorge, geologically interesting and a major attraction in Victorian and Edwardian times. This is not free but well worth the £5 entry.

Other than that I don't feel that this dale quite matches those earlier in the YD series. However not far from Summer Bridge (down river from Pateley Bridge,) is a wonderful spectacle, Brimham Rocks, a number of sandstone crags of weird shapes.
