Big Rooms, Big Groups, Small Price on the Mosel River Aug 07, 2010
Large, modern 14-story concrete hotel with an external panoramic glass elevator and two internal elevators.
Everything about this hotel is HUGE except the price:
- Huge rooms
- Huge parking
- Huge breakfast buffet
- Huge building
- Huge panoramic views
Huge hot breakfast buffet with eggs, two kinds of sausage, green beans, cold cuts, 4 kinds of cheese, 3 types of bread, 4 types of cereal, 4 kinds of yogurt, 2 types of juice and about 10 wait staff on hand. The restaurant is also open 1800-2200 for dinner but we did not eat there except for the large breakfast buffet.
Large full-service bar with long drinks like Jack Daniels. Also serves ice cream. Outdoor deck seating with a view of the Mosel. Library book shelves and flat screen TVs in the bar/lounge area were a nice touch for reading or sports TV watching.
Modern reception desk with helpful staff when we needed taxis.
Huge rooms with a large “living room” and 2 double beds. Large bathroom with a large metal tub. Old but tiled floor to ceiling despite the large corner sink. The "American style toilet" without the German low-flow "shelf" was unfortunately subject to plugs. Room also boasted a pants press and stocked mini-bar. The small CRT TV did not compare to the large room size, so it was difficult to watch the tiny TV from your bed location across the large "living room" area.
Generally old concrete building but a great view of the Mosel and downtown Trier in the distance--a 45-minute walk away (which we hiked at night with some safety concerns with groups of "smokers" and "lovers" along the unlit path along the Mosel River). McDonalds and Burger King nearby within walking/sight distance on the well-lit main street.
Beds were 4/5 comfortable. European duvet sheet/blanket combos were good but not great.
Good value for our group: approx 41,37 EUR including breakfast per couple.
Typical scratchy German beat-to-death towels are not fun anywhere and were prevelant at this hotel.
Somewhat noisy room by elevators (Room 712).
Plenty of covered parking.
View of Mosel was very good and the city of Trier with the cathedral steeples made for a great cityscape view.
Overall, we liked the NH Hotel Trier and would consider staying here again if we ever returned to this historic and welcoming old Roman city.
