Great room, caters to tour groups Sep 01, 2013
We are given basically a suite #67 with a room with 2 singles, another room off the living room separated by a curtain with 2 more single beds, and a room with a king bed all comfy with several pillows. Unfortunately, this is one of the very few rooms that does not have views of the crater, which is one of the reasons we chose this place. There are 6 complimentary bottles of water. The 2 real bedrooms have a plug in heater each, the living room has a huge wood fireplace that warms that room and the other bedroom and is lit up early evening by the staff. The living room has a flat screen tv though we never used it so no idea on what channels are provided. There is a toilet room and a shower room with sink. Amenities provided are shampoo and shower gel. Shower water takes a few minutes to warm up but then it's good. The suite/room is very comfortable.

Wifi is available which we were very happy about. There is live music in the late afternoon and early evening and an acrobatic show at 7:15pm for 15 mins prior to supper. Supper is 7:30-9pm. Salads and dessert along with fruit and cheeses and a few dishes are buffet style. The main course is ala carte and you have a choice of 3 dishes. You also have a choice of 2 soups. The food was decent. At night after dark you are to be escorted to and from your room as there are buffalo however I walked to the restaurant on my own as did the girls as we had not been told that on arrival. Also in the morning when it was still dark, we called for an escort but after a few minutes we just went on our own when no one showed and we figured with 3 of us it would be ok.

The only real downfall is that it does cater to groups and it was most evident when my friends tried to go to the bar and went to sit and were told they had to move as there would be a group coming in. So they sat elsewhere. Then shortly after that, they were made to move again as another tour group was coming however there was no where else to sit. A nice Australian couple invited them to join them so that they could sit. The table they had been asked to move out of sat empty for over an hour until just before the acrobatic show, and even then, they aren't sure the people who sat there were even ones from the tour group. It left a sour taste in my friends' mouth.

We did get a boxed breakfast and lunch from the lodge for the next day and I will say they gave a lot of food and a good selection.

All in all, the room was great, service varied a lot, it was great for a night.

Hmm, maybe we just had unfortunate luck then with being there the night that it was crazy busy with tour groups. Brian, we stayed a couple more nights outside of Ngorongoro crater at Ngorongoro Farmhouse which was AMAZING!! I'll get that review up when I have time. Trying to juggle Christmas, working, working overtime, birthdays, etc, has been challenging lol. Anyway, we had just wanted 1 night with crater views and close to the entrance for the safari in the crater the next morning. After that we moved to the farmhouse as we went hiking a volcano the next day. :) The place you stayed at sure is a good value for the money!!

Sorry to hear about the change at the Serena lodge Hali! We were only 2 people, but got a nice hut with a balcony facing the crater. In the morning the antelopes were walking around our hut. It seems like the standard was better 15 years ago. it sure was expensive! We didnĀ“t see any tour groups either. We met a couple, two photographers, who had taken most of the photos for the postcards that were sold in Tanzania. Very interesting couple.

Safari travel is Big business and Ngorongoro is expensive too. We stayed outside the park just a short drive away at Nysa Lodge. Nice place and only $45 for a Banda style hut. See my review here:

This hotel is superb. I would not be able to choose between Ngorongoro and Serengeti, as both are amazing! Do not miss the sunset, and if you want to take photos of the sun coming out, you need to be at the main terrace around 6:15am. The dinning room is beautiful and I would say that this Serena is where they served the best food. If you have to book a room, tell them to get the third floor as it has better views over the crater. Very nice place indeed! worth the money...

One of the most beautiful hotels I've ever seen... Especially the view from your room, the people and the food. Just perfect.
