Ngoc Son Temple
Ngoc Son Temple Hanoi Reviews
Nice, but forgettable Nov 07, 2009
The small Ngoc Son Temple, which is located on a tiny little island at the northern part of Hoan Kiem Lake is probably the most visited temple of Hanoi. The temple is dedicated to General Tran Hung Dao, who defeated the Mongols in the 13th century. Most interesting is the Huc (Rising Sun) Bridge that connects the island to the lakeshore. The bridge is bright red and constructed in classical Vietnamese style.
Another appealing attraction is a stuffed lake turtle in a glass case inside the temple. The Hoan Kiem Lake doesn’t just accommodate fish, it also gives shelter to lake turtles. On rare occasions, one of them surfaces, bringing luck to anyone who is witness to the occasion. Make no mistake, the surfacing of one of these turtles is hard to miss since they are huge (around 2 meters!) and weigh about 250 kilo. No one is sure how many turtles live in the lake, or how they managed to survive the urbanization around the lake.
If you want to see a beautiful temple, go to the nearby Temple of Literature. If you have time to spare and don’t mind visiting another temple, go to this Ngoc Son Temple.
