Newton Lodge Auckland Reviews
Affordable, clean and comfortable hostel in a great location. Feb 12, 2014
I stayed here for about 6 months and loved every minute of it!! There's a lot to say about this place, first i'll address the prices. At $17.32 USD per night its incredibly affordable, especially for a city central hostel! Whether your just passing through, or sticking around with a working holiday visa, Newton Lodge is excellent value. The size of the hostel is a great part of this place. It's pretty small, the best thing about that is most of the people at this hostel tend to be long termer's, so once you get in the majority of the hostel is like one close family where everyone knows everyone and it begins to really feel like home. I loved that about this place more than anything. The location can't be beat, sitting right at the intersection of K road and Queen Street, and with the free city bus stop (providing you get an AT HOP card, feel free to ask me for details) right at that intersection you can get anywhere in the city quickly from this hostel. If your up for a short walk, Mount Eden is about 45 minutes walk from the hostel. Nice place to relax on top of an old inactive volcano and have a picnic and a few drinks with friends. The hostel was always kept clean, they had cleaners run through it every day early to mid day. The kitchen had most everything you would need and the community room that the kitchen was in was comfortable fun. Great yet small place for everyone to sit around on the three couches or the three dinning tables and chat, play cards, watch tv etc. Next to the hostel, if your an early riser, is a tiny little hole in the wall coffee shop that serves the most AMAZING coffee and latte I've ever had. Definitely grab a cup on your way through. The only downsides here would be that the Kitchen doesn't really accommodate the traffic it gets, so unless your up for eating early or late, your going to be fighting for a spot during dinner hours for the working crowd. (about 6 - 9) The same thing goes with spots in the three refrigerators for your food. Last, because it is such a small hostel, noise in the living area can bleed over into your rooms on eventful nights. Which are pretty much every Friday and Saturday night here. So if you work weekends you may find it a bit difficult unless you have some earplugs. There are to many pro's out-weighing the con's of this place so if your going through Auckland definitely stay here!
