Newmillerdam Country Park Feb 11, 2017
I visited Newmillerdam Country Park on a family outing as a kid. We were intending to return over a year ago but the idea was abandoned due to the overwhelming number of visitors along with the fact there was no car parking available! I was determined to return so one weekday in August 2015 I made plans to return and also to travel there by bus.

Newmillerdam goes back to the late 13th Century when a corn-mill was built and area once was called New Mylle Dam. The Pilkington Family owned the country park and had lodges dotted around for gamekeepers to protected the site from poachers. Today just two remain which guards the Dam. The Boathouse was added in the early 19th Century for entertaining family and friends of the park owners.

The path around the lake with surrounding woodland is the main attraction and there is also marked trails through the woods too. I did the walk round the lake including a diversion to do the Lawns Dike Trail, a broad walk trail installed by the Friends of Newmillerdam Country Park. It was a pleasant couple of hours or so spent walking and enjoying the park's flora and fauna.

To get to Newmillerdam Country Park by bus you can catch the No. 59 which is an hourly bus service either from Wakefield or Barnsley (central bus stations). Please do note that the last buses leaving the park either direction are late afternoons (around or just after 5.00pm).

Beautiful & Stunning May 15, 2011
Newmillerdam Country Park is a free (albeit pay and display parking) woodland area with a huge dam in the middle. With it's stunning views you can walk around the dam taking in all the different areas of conservation and wildlife which can be found in abundance within the 230+ acres. There's a boathouse, water sports, horse riding, cycling, picnic areas, and it's really easy to get lost in it's many paths and tracks that go off in all directions. Carvings on the benches (owls & vikings) at to it's quirkiness, and there's all sorts of special little additions you can seek out on your walk around.

They have the Newmillerdam Conservation Group which plan volunteer work each year, something which they advertise on your way in - but even without this, it really is a beautiful area. There's not many facilities, a couple of public houses and a lovely little cafe, the best bit has to be the 2 ice-cream vans - one at each entrance.

It would probably take a couple of hours to get around, and if you stick to the track around the dam then it's pretty much pushchair/wheelchair friendly - but head off the main track then there's steep inclines. It's also dog friendly, and you can let them off the lead and into the water - if they can swim!

It's a beautiful park, and if it's a low-cost family day out you're after then I'd recommend Newmillerdam in an instant.
