Newgrange was constructed over 5,000 years ago (about 3,200 B.C.), making it older than Stonehenge in England and the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. Newgrange was built during the Neolithic or New Stone Age by a farming community that prospered on the rich lands of the Boyne Valley. Knowth and Dowth are similar mounds that together with Newgrange have been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Archaeologists classified Newgrange as a passage tomb, however Newgrange is now recognised to be much more than a passage tomb. Ancient Temple is a more fitting classification, a place of astrological, spiritual, religious and ceremonial importance, much as present day cathedrals are places of prestige and worship where dignitaries may be laid to rest. Newgrange is a large kidney shaped mound covering an area of over one acre, retained at the base by 97 kerbstones, some of which are richly decorated with megalithic art. The 19 metre long inner passage leads to a cruciform chamber with a corbelled roof. The amount of time and labour invested in construction of Newgrange suggests a well-organized society with specialised groups responsible for different aspects of construction.

Can you tell me ~ what is all the fuss about? A passage tomb sounds like some place to bury the dead. Big deal. Oh, but it's so much more than that. This particular passage tomb, located in the Boyne Valley in County Meath, is situated on a high knoll that overlooks the River Boyne. Carbon dating puts its construction around 3,000 B.C. It predates the Egyptian pyramids by at least 500 years and ancient Stonehedge by 1,000 years or more. ...

In 2006 I went to the Emerald Isle (for work, what else) but this time it was another long expeditions. This time I was getting my own apartment!!! No hotel rooms, no room service, no maid service, what would I possibly do?
Become one with the locals of course! I made a lot of friends and lived happily for those 2 months. I wish my Company would have agreed to Intel's terms and kept me there for a year!

So I just recently got back from a three week intensive visit to Ireland/Northern Ireland where I was studying for school credit. I got some studying done, lots of sightseeing, and even more drinking with the locals and my new friends! Enjoy!
