He did his thing with his family in Queens and I did my thing with my family in PA and VA.  But we planned to meet up to see how we were doing socially.  Of course as you veterans know,  coming back from a 'combat' environment and trying to integrate and socialize again is not easy.  We both admitted to arguing much more with our family and feeling depressed and whatever withdrawls that we went thru.  But we were glad to see each other and share some of our feelings w...

Well I've arrived in New York now. I actually touched down into the airport in Newark, JERSEY ie not even NY state. I thought that I had like typed the wrong place in my flight planner or something and was freaking out a little bit. I had always seen the JFK airport shown. However I went outside and found that I could catch a bus to New York city so that was ok. It turns out it wasn't that far away after all.   On my first day I went to go visit thet World Trade Centre ...

First Night in The BIG Apple

I am a west coast girl. Even though I'm currently living in the Big Easy, I still consider myself a Californian at heart. Growing up I always dreamed of moving to New York and having a fabulous life and going to all of the famous fabulous places. Well, things did not end up that way and as I grew up I somehow developed a fear of even going to New York, thinking it would be dirty and scary and I'd get shot and die and no one would know who I was (and yes I live in New Orleans now....). Alas, ...

It was an absolutely perfect day to enjoy music outdoors in NYC.  We planned to meet up with friends at Bourbon Street (46th bet 8th and 9th Aves...see review) for a touch of New Orleans food and music to get us in the mood.  We met up with friends of mine from the NO Jazz Fest bored...Threadheads.  Much like TBers, they travel around the country to enjoy jazz and blues festivals.  Today, we had about 8 - 10 states represented.  After enjoying a wonderful brunch at Bo...

After a long, delayed flight (complete with Alitalia taking all of the luggage off the plane when we were all in our seats, and then loading it all back on), I am back in NYC.  I actually made it into work today (Mon 12/4), although I'm still on European time so I'm still suffering from some jet-lag.  The hotel never found the cell phone, but since that's the worst thing that happened during my entire trip, I'm not complaining.  As the plane was circling over the bright lights ...

As you all know, hotels in NY can be quite expensive. Many are run-down, don't have proper a/c, and many don't even have elevators. To our surprise, we found a turn-of the century hotel on 77th & Broadway that proved to be a real bargin. It's called the Hotel Belleclaire. It's only two stops away from Time Square and reasonably priced. But, you need to book way in advance. We don't recommend going to "cheap" route when lodging in NY. All the cheap stuff is just that, "cheap, dirty, ...

Traveling has its self imposed responsibilities such as getting to your flights on time. Also, drinking before a flight is bad. Next time, let your friends know that you have an early flight and that you must not succumb to peer pressure. And that you're driving to the airport, so hangovers are out of the question.Needless to say, New York at any time can be a worthwhile experience if you allow it to be.

The last 10 days have been spent in NYC.  10 days in one place is the longest we'll be in any one place on this trip, so this will be a pretty long summary.  We stayed with Tash's cousins in Long Island which was great, "commuting" into Manhattan every day to do stuff.  First impressions were that New York is nowhere near as grimy and unpleasant as we expected it to be - we didn't get mugged or murdered once!  In fact the whole city seems quite nice, considering ...

NYC really is a bit of a travel hub, and this is now the sixth time I've passed through, which actually makes it rather nice to return because things are friendly & familiar.  And I love New York - it really has such a unique feel and vibrancy. I pretty much just rolled in in the evening, did a little wandering & a little dinner, tried to sleep & had to be up @ 5am to head out to the airport and out of the country.  It was bizarre getting back to London, because it i...

So after months of planning and worrying the time is finally here to make my first non-rev trip out of the country.   I wake up after about 2 hours of sleep (thanks to a 4:28am phone call from Angela about nothing) and get ready to go to the airport.  My goal is to fly into LGA and then take a shuttle to JFK.  However, the LGA flight is booked full, so I am also fully prepared to fly to Newark instead.  Of course the Newark flight leaves first and the gates couldn't b...

When my friend Ian and I drove up to the airport this morning, the realization that I was actually going through with this sort of struck us both at the same time. "Holy shit, you're actually doing this. There's no going back now. I'm nervous!" Ian exclaimed, half-joking. And with his exclamation I came to the realization myself: This is actually going to happen. I spoke with my host on the phone this morning. She had an interesting accent and appended an inquisitive “yeah?” to the end of...

We were a big group of exchange students all longing to finally get to see some of Manhattan! We were so excited when we left the campus, we were staying at, to go on a sight seeing tour. Everything went fine in the morning. We took a tour of the United Nations and had a lunch cruise on the Hudson. To see the statue of liberty was amazing and we all rushed to get pictures as we were driving past it. Going past ground zero (which we could see from the boat) was strange and everyone went q...

Hello everybody,After an amazing going away party with lots and lots of crying I was on my way to America, my adventure. We (a group of exchange students from the Netherlands) spend the first 2,5 days in New York City. Beautiful as always, I was amazed just as I was seven years ago. Not only by the breathtaking skyscrapers, but by it's people too. Every single one of them seems to know exactly where they're going, in such a busy city. I loved every minute of it.But when we got to Ground Zero ...
