New York Marriott East Side Reviews
Centrally Located Marriott in Manhattan Sep 23, 2010
This was a pleasure stay (versus business) in midtown Manhattan with the intent of behaving like a tourist. The hotel satisfyed our requirement to stay at a central location where we can easily tour the abundance of attractions in the city.
This Marriott is located on Lexington Avenue between 48th and 49th street on the East Site of 5th avenue. It is walking distance from bus stops, train stops, Time Square, Rockefeller Center, Central Park and many other attractions in the city. We chose this hotel for it's location being close to the MET (Metropolitan Museum of Art) and a meeting place for some friends later in the weekend. (reference blog)
Because of the location, the Marriott is very expensive at $470 for a Deluxe room and $599 for a Superior room. These are the lower end Marriott rooms with reasonable space. We were fortunate to be able to leverage my Marriott points for a free stay. Free is good.
The Hotel reaches at least 33 floors which is not too tall by New York standards but tall enough to have a presence. It it across the street from the Intercontinental Hotel and around the corner from the famous Waldorf Astoria. An architecture fan would love the area as there is no shortage of buildings to photograph or in my case, draw.
The Lobby (a concentrated rectangle) is no nonsense as you enter with registration, bell hop and stairs to the restroom on the right (southside). Concierge and a moderate lobby bar on the left (northside) and a row of six elevators to your front (eastside) split by a door to a small gift shop.
Standard meeting rooms and restaurants encompass the 2nd floor and I believe the 3rd if I recall correctly. There is a fitness area (not sure where that was and I hope to never find one).
Our stay was comfortable and without issue. Where there is a known New York City problem with bed bugs, this room did not have any (we thoroughly checked).
We worked with the very helpful concierge to obtain tickets to a broadway show. They arranged for the tickets to be delivered to the hotel at no charge.
A quaint Japanese restaurant was not far around the corner from the hotel (Restaurant Riki) and a Spanish Tapas place is also closeby but did not have a chance to go there.
Although pricey due to the location, a great place to stay. I'd do it again (I just would have to SAVE UP)
