New York Botanical Garden Bronx Reviews
An Oasis in New York City Nov 02, 2009
New York City is the largest city in the United States and sometimes the crowds can be overwhelming. In the New York Botanical Garden located in the Bronx, visitors can experience a collection of peaceful, beautiful gardens based in a major metropolitan city.
Founded in 1891, the New York Botanical Garden is a collection of more than 50 gardens and one million plants. Originally founded by botanists Nathaniel and Elizabeth Britton who were inspired by gardens in England, the New York legislature set aside land in the North Bronx so that the City of New York would have a quality botanical garden. Major industrialists like Andrew Carnegie, J. Pierpoint Morgan and Cornelius Vanderbilt matched government financing to ensure a spectacular garden.
I try to visit anytime I am in New York City. The trails and landscaping are beautiful and I could spend hours just walking through the grounds. You forget you are in a major city.
Various exhibits are organized throughout the year with one of the most popular being the Holiday Train Show. This show is around Christmas and the displays are of New York landmarks all made in plants and flowers. It's amazing seeing things like the Empire State Building constructed entirely of plants.
The spring and fall are also a great time to visit. In the spring, the rose gardens are in full bloom and in the fall, the trees have a bright display of color.
The current exhibition is called Kiku in the Japanese Gardens, which is vibrant and creative. Kiku means chrysanthemum in Japanese and the displays are filled with a sea of these flowers. The current exhibition also includes bonsai trees which are trees designed to grow in one single pot. I had no idea the amount of work involved as some of the trees are 80 to 100 years old and have been cultivated for many years. These trees are lifetime projects for their growers.
Admission to the gardens will run U.S. $20.00 and hours will vary depending on the time of year.
The grounds also include a terrific gift shop filled with unusual gifts (geared to a gardening theme) for both adults and children.
I cannot recommend the Botanical Garden enough. I have been many times and always want to go back for more.
