New Taxi Park
New Taxi Park Kampala Reviews
Public Transportation option while in Kampala Dec 29, 2010
Part of what makes Kampala's public transportation are the innumerable Toyota Hiace's called "taxi". Unlike in the western world, taxi does not mean a Yellow cab, it means public transport with 15-25 people in one mini van. If you want a 'yellow cab' type transport, you have to ask for a "Special".
The starting point for most taxis, is Kampala Taxi park, which in itself is a tourist attraction. The concentration of taxis in one spot, the driver's manuvring in and out of the narrow spots leaves your heart leaping. It is quite an experience.
Now, knowing this could save you time and money when in Kampala. It is cheaper to use the taxi than a special hire car, plus you get to where you are going much faster. The other option is using the "Boda Bodas" these are scooters turned public transport. Refer to my review on Boda Boda Transport.
The taxis move and stop at the call of whoever is getting out. The stop catch phrase is "Maso awo" which is pronounced "maasaawo". It does not matter where you are, if you shout maso awo, the driver will stop immediately, the conductor lets you out and they are on their way.
Highly recommended as part of an adventure in Uganda. Try it atleast once, you will be surprised. If you are staying longer, you may want to use more of the taxis, save time and money.
