City of Rocks State Park
posted by:
Apr 10, 2008 - May 16, 2008
Up and ready for a new day well before nine a.m. so we went down to the lobby for breakfast.  A small bowl of Raisin Bran cereal, a glass of orange juice and a cup of coffee. Only one stop today and that is Rock City State Park, between Deming and Faywood, New Mexico. It is a very unusual outcropping of rocks in what is otherwise a very normal desert setting.  It is named this way because from a distance you think it is a small city ahead.  Only as you get close do you realize...

Just me and my Dad.
posted by:
Mar 10, 2008 - Jul 10, 2008
In order to assure he wouldn't miss me too much on my year abroad, my dad and I planned a roadtrip. 40 hours together in a little car ought to do the trick. The second half of our trip was from Houston to Santa Fe, via Carlsbad, NM. Amazingly enough, there's not a lot to see in West Texas or eastern New Mexico. It was a lot of ghost towns, tumble weeds and wind. Spotted with the occasional Dairy Queen oasis, to our delight. With only 2 cds in the car and a not so appealing variety of country ...

Ute Lake

Our family has a tradition of an annual camping trip.  This particular trip was planned by my sisiter-in-law the location,Ute lake, in New Mexico, was chosen due to it's midway point.  Normally I'm all for camping, I love it!  This particular year though I had a 4 month old baby.  Boating for hours with a baby was out of the question and the campsite due to lack of trees was hot as hell.  Around the time that everyone started feeling like they were...

Took a right in Albuquerque....
posted by:
Jul 06, 2006 - Jul 09, 2006
Flew into Albuquerque early in the morning and with the hour pick-up for moving from Central to Mountain Time, we had a full day to head for Santa Fe.  New Mexico has always resonated with me and this excursion ended a fifteen year absence.  There are a myriad of mystical landscapes here, but what I like best are the extended stretches that have no telephone poles – the simple deficiency begging that modern people have yet to muddy nature with ‘progress’.   ...

Touring through New Mexico
posted by:
Jun 12, 2004 - Jun 19, 2004
Today we were leaving Amarillo, and we had a long way to go. We were going to spend the night in Gallup, NM, but planned a stop in Santa Fe to see the Lorreto Chapel, famous for the Miracle Staircase. Distance from Amarillo to Gallup was about 450 miles. We wanted to leave reasonably early, so we could spend some time in Santa Fe. I think I planned our day at about 11 hours of driving, breaks, and sightseeing. That’s plenty for any day.   We had to stop and say our final good-byes to...

Carlsbad Caverns

I was sooo excited to take the 4 hour caving tour on Saturday where you get to crawl around the cave off the trails.  And then I was soooo bummed when I found out the tour was sold out - in fact, they sell out a month in advance!  I wish the website would have mentioned that!  I almost didn't make the 4 hour drive down there because I don't like regular cave tours.  As a geologist, I know a fair bit about caves and I don't like listening to the stories of, "if you look ove...

It's been great to be back in Albuquerque the past few months, because more than anything else, I miss the food! I even made a trip out to New Mexico in 2004 for the sole purpose of eating. Here is what could be waiting for you:(Note: This may be a bad idea if you have Acid Reflux disease or are on some sort of a low fat diet) Grandy's Restaurant - 1400 Juan Tabo Blvd Here is where you can find the best chicken nuggets you will ever have. You can get them with your choice of two sides. I...

Shiprock
posted by:
Jul 04, 2006 - Jul 26, 2006
Shiprock, New Mexico has legendary status in Indian lore.  In fact almost everyday at dusk the giant mountain seems to float away from the ground it sits on, like a real ship.   This is another of those sights that you can see from miles away and you can tell why there is such a legend.   Located just south of the town of Shiprock we found roads that led us all the way around it, if not close in some places.  This formation seems to be on private land, bordered by ...

Slaughter Canyon Cave (New Cave) near Carlsbad Caverns New Mexico

What is "Spelunking"?  The real difference between caving and spelunking is caving is like Carlsbad Caverns….they have lights and paths made for you and spelunking has none of that so when you go into caves you have to take your own equipment, lights, repel, head and knee gear, food & water…some people even take diving gear….go in and eventfully make your way out.  It is fun even when you get lost! LOL Slaughter Canyon Cave (New Cave) near Carlsbad Caverns New Mexico Too...

Chama
posted by:
Sep 22, 2007 - Sep 28, 2007
Ventured into Chama to find a small, sleepy town nestled in the north-central part of New Mexico. The town was situated on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad. The narrow-gauge railroad runs into the high country near Cumbres Pass, through scenic Toltec Gorge, with the other terminal in Antonito, Colorado. Although I did not ride the train, I was reminded of it's presence as it made way like clockwork right beside the park wher I was staying. I wandered around the town and ...

YES! I will be going home to Pace, FL soon! I have been away from home for about two and a half months!  While I was gone, I have been to such states as Virginia, West Vigrinia, Kentucky, and more I can't name right now. It will be a 20 hour drive to get home! I will have more on it later.
