So for the second year in a row we have come to Atlantic City for some gambling and to celebrate my hubby's birthday. As usual we are staying at the Tropicana Hotel and Casino. This time we got an upgrade to the Havanna Tower which was nice though it was pretty far from the parking garage. We used the self parking garage since we usually don't take the car anywhere when we come here. It's also pretty cheap, $5 is not bad. I've been to places that have just been outrages with their parking. Lo...

The background to this trip is that my Aunt is not doing well and is on life support. My dad wanted to come and see her before she left and wanted some support in getting out here and around.Although not the best of circumstances I am excited about this trip because it means I get to spend some decent time with my dad for the first time in 10 years probably and also meet some wider family I've never met. In the great depression my grandfather and mother split their time working between the U...

My dad’s not responding well to the clinical trial he’s on. He’s the first person to experience side effects and it’s affecting his liver. In his usual style, he thinks the doctors are out to get him.
My parents fight constantly. It’s like I’m 7 years old again, and I wake up to yelling and the noise of breaking glass outside my door. I would climb out the window and think that some day, I’d get out of Concord. I guess it’s not Concord that suffocates you after all. Plus, th...

My 4th of July was supposed to be spent on the beach during the day and then on a boat at night watching the fireworks off the Cape May shore. However, this Independence Day I spent my time in bed and close to a bathroom. I got "Ecuador Sick" again. It seems like this happens every 3 to 6 months for a couple of days and then everything goes back to normal. I've gone to the doctors numerous times and they've tested me for everything...supposedly. BUT, I still have a weak immune system and a da...

The best experience of my life. I say that boldly, but never more confidently. The United States Men's National Team played Argentina's National Team in a final friendly soccer match before 2010 World Cup qualifying. The end result was 0-0, but it was so much more exciting than the result would have you believe...It started out on a night when I was reliving the USA vs. England friendly through an article on ESPN.com. I was scrolling through the match stats when I noti...

This was my first time at Crawfish Festival. I had met a bunch of people off the JazzFest website (yes, another chat group -- this one Jazz Fest lovers). They (we) are called Threadheads. Some of the greatest people I've met. Just like TBers, they are all about helping each other out, discussing great jazz festivals, best beer, food, anything and everything. Here is a write up from a local paper about the Crawfish Festival. Next year is the 20th...

I just can't restrain myself anymore. The plan was to wait until I got to Costa Rica to write my first blog entry, but I'm just so excited that I can't help myself! I leave in exactly two weeks. First, I'm off to Puerto Viejo, which is in the Province of Limon, on the eastern (Carribean) coast of the country. After a week there relaxing, I'm heading off to Liberia, in the opposite northwestern part of the country for my 3-week volunteer program. Can't wait!

This was my first time to Manhattan and I was excited. A co-worker organized an overnight bus trip staying right in the city. We left south of Pittsburgh at 6am, Saturday with a couple of pit stops and lunch before approaching Hoboken, NJ. Renee (the lady who put it all together) put in the dvd of Grease for us to watch & one from last years trip. The approaching of a big city was definite as traffic was heavy and slow even on a Saturday morning. Then we could see the outline of...

So, here's the summary of the trip (it keeps evolving as the trip goes on):I have 3 goals for this trip:1) See the most amazing sights in the US2) Figure out what I want to do with my life for the next 5 years3) Re-orient myself on many dimensions (fitness/health, some personality traits, etc)For the first goal, I bought two books that are basically guiding me the whole way:- National Geographic's Guide to Scenic Highways and Byways - 275 Most Scenic Drives- National Geographic's Guide to Nat...

You wake up to an overcast day and you want to go visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. You hauled all of your camera equipment with you, waited in line to go through the security checkpoints and then realize that none of the photos will turn out well due to lack of good lighting. What do you do?You play tourist, circa 1905! So I grabbed my Kodak Brownie snapshot camera (paid a $1 for it), loaded in the 6 exposure film cartridge (another 15 cents), paid the $.10 for the ferry and went...

Ellis Island - the place where millions of immigrants passed through on their way to life in America, including some of my ancestors. The Statue of Liberty - symbol of freedom to many. The statue is indeed impressive in size and crafting for the day in which it was constructed.

Beth is leaving soon to go back to New Orleans. We had lots of fun with her. Her friends came and visited this past weekend. Tammy, her friend from Cuyahoga Falls, OH came over the first night, on July 21. It was nice to see her. I hadn't seen her in about 15 years or so. Leah and her husband, Caleb came up to LBI from DC. Leah and Beth went to Ohio University together. And Shemo (Jen) came down from Boston. Shemo is from Cuyahoga Falls as...

I was expecting the officers would ask me what would I do in MI, but
it didn’t happen. The officer checked my passport and just commented: “you come
