Traveling cheap to and from the big cities Jun 22, 2008
New Century Travel Bus was recommended to me by a friend of a friend. Having the desire to visit NYC as much as possible this summer, I looked into it and decided to first try it out when my parents visited.

With buses running from Philly every half hour starting at 6:30am, the website gives you the option to buy round trip tickets to and from numerous cities. At only $20 round trip, this is a great deal to get to and from places like New York and Washington D.C. Make sure you print out two confirmation e-mails when you order your tickets, one for the trip there and one for the trip back.

When you arrive at the corner of 11th St. and Filbert, you'll be a little confused as to where to go to get on the bus. Go the the section of 11th St. between Filbert and Arch, and look for the New Century travel office under the building that 11th St. goes through. Once inside, take the confirmations to the ticket window and simply hand them to the cashier. He/she will write random stuff on it, signifying you're cleared for boarding. Next, go back outside and look for the bus to the city you want to go to. There will most likely be many people doing the same thing as you, so just ask around if you can't find it.

Once on, don't expect too much. You only paid $20. The air conditioning works, but don't expect to be able to use the bathroom on the charter bus. The bus is a melting pot of Philly culture...everybody takes it. It's not blue collar or white collar, more like no collar. Everyone minds their own business, and it's not cramped...the ride is enjoyable. Depending on the traffic, you can get to D.C. in 2 hours or NYC in around an hour and a half.

Go through the same routine when you're ready to make the second leg of the round trip back to Philly. Remember where the bus dropped you off, and go back to that same spot. Ask around if you get lost...most of the residents of Chinatown know about the transit buses around the area, and will point you in the right direction.

For $20, this is quite a steal when you think about the tolls you would be paying and the gas you would be wasting. And you can sleep the whole time! Go to sleep in the city of brotherly love, wake up in our nation's capital or the Big Apple!

As far as the types of people riding, very similar to those that would ride in a subway. So would you ride in a subway? Then New Century Travel Bus is the perfect option for traveling around the northeast!

That's pretty cool. Yeah a lot of those Chinatown buses are pretty cheap, but you get what you pay for. BusJunction is a good site for checking out fares and you can trust it because it leans towards the more reputable bus lines like Megabus and Bolt Bus. Check it out, they have several Philadelphia buses.
