Pretty carvings! Nov 14, 2011
Not to be confused with the old cathedral in Salamanca, this new cathedral is hardly very new at all. Construction began during the sixteenth century and it was consecrated during the eighteenth century. It was built in the late Gothic and Baroque style. The fa├žade is wonderfully decorated and the dome is rather beautifully capped as well. On one of the doors, the figures are particularly quirky. A rabbit always gets rubbed for good luck as he is at a reachable level; you will see how different he looks compared to the other carvings. A little further up, you will see an astronaut; not what you would expect of course but it was a very fun addition in my opinion during the restoration work in the 1990s.

Although you have to pay to see the interior, I think it is free during one weekday so it might be worth checking this out with your ho(s)tel or the tourist office. If in Salamanca, you are bound to see this building, and it's worth going to see, if only for the astronaut and rabbit!
