Cheap Day Trip From Toluca Feb 22, 2009
Nevado de Toluca (Xinantecatl "the Naked Lord") is a strato-volcano about 30 kilometers southwest of Toluca. It is listed as 4th highest (15,354 feet) in Mexico, behind Pico de Orizaba, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl. The crater is approximately 1.5 kilometers (0.93 mile) wide. There are two lakes on the crater floor at about 4,200 meters (13,800 feet), the larger is Lago del Sol and the smaller is Lago de la Luna. A road runs onto the crater floor. The highest point is Pico del Fraile at 4,680 meters (15,354 feet) which is located on the south side of the crater. A road runs into the caldera to the lakes at an elevation of 13,800 feet. There are two lakes on the crater floor at about 4,200 meters (13,800 feet), the larger is Lago del Sol and the smaller is Lago de la Luna. The last major eruption was about 10 million years ago, erupting an estimated 14 cubic kilometers of sediment. The eruption placed 1.5 meters (5 feet) gravel pumice in the area of modern Toluca and about 50 centimeters (2 feet) pumice sand in the area modern Mexico City. This peak is no longer snow covered year round. There are great views, some wildlife, pack a lunch and spend the day.
