A general tip for getting a taxi - negotiate only if you know the average price from point A to point B! Other than that, ask and pay the driver FIRST. DO NOT tell him the destination and pay him afterward. This is pretty common sense, but for people from the West, they can be too trusting. Stay safe and have phun :)

I arrived Malta by ship and called the people at the gate to call for a taxi. After waiting 15min a car without a meter showed up and we got inside before we agreed on the price. After 30seconds the taxidriver said that he wanted 45euro for going in to valletta. 15euros each and since we where 3people in the taxi 45euro should be an ok price (he meant). When we said that it was way to expensive he stopped the car in the middle of nowhere and said that if we dont want to pay the price he wanted we had to walk.. Being at least 4-5kilometers from anything we decided that we just had to pay the price this guy was offering. And the trip was about 20min..

So.. if you take a taxi in malta , negotiate on the price before getting in to the taxi. For 45euro you can rent a car for about 3days so this is really a much better way of transportation.

This review reminds me shameful behaviour of taxi drivers in Prague. Taking a taxi in the street is about to get overcharged, if you don't know the prices and are a foreigner. It is better to call for a taxi operated by phone orders. Disgrace!!!
