Needles Overview

Needles is a small town of about 4900 (up 2% since 2000) located at the intersection of Interstate 40 and US Highway 95 in Southern California, near the border with Nevada and Arizona. There is ample evidence of prehistoric habitation of the area from the many petroglyphs and pictographs found nearby. The Mohave, one of the Colorado River Indian Tribes, have lived here for hundreds of years. Nearby Fort Mohave was established in 1859 and the town was formed in 1883 when the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad crossed the Colorado River at this point. Needles was later a popular stop along the old Route 66.
