Nederlands vestigings museum Naarden Reviews
Back in military history of the netherlands Mar 25, 2011
A big part of holland is located below sea level, and we are using water for all kinds of things.During the war with Spain, the french the pruisen ect we they use water to defend the area by flooding parts of land to create a buffer between the cities and the enemy.
Naarden-Vesting is one of the cities of the dutch water defence line and it's there from 1673.
This fortress is one of the survivors and the museum started in 1955.
If you see the city Naarder-vesting from the air it looks like a star, because there are 6 bastions around the city.
Visiting the museum gives you a idea how the soldiers lived and defend the city. You can visit some Kazemats where old canons are located, gunpowder was stored and with Marquette's and dioramas gives are clear view of that time.
Every third Sunday of the month between two and four o'clock there is a demonstration of firing off four canons.
The explanation of that story is in dutch, there is some info in English.
Is it worth a visit...Yes, it is a piece of history of Holland and also for children is a lot to do and see.
Prizes are affordable; children till 5 years are free, from 5 till 12 3 euro and adults pay 6 euros.
The museum is open ( 15 march-1 November)Tuesday till Friday from 10.30 till 17.00hr and in the weekends from 12.00 till 17.00.
