Lewis and Clark Visitor Center
posted by:
Aug 07, 2007 - Aug 16, 2007
Well, I made the trip from Nashville to Nebraska.  Whew, it was hot.  I finally stopped at a place that I have driven by a bunch of times just inside the Nebraska border, overlooking the Missouri River.  It is a visitor center focusing on the journey of Lewis and Clark west to the Pacific Ocean, back in 1803-1806.  The best thing about the center was the building.  Yes, it had a lot of great information, but the building was beautiful.   Sorry, not too …

Day Four ~ 370 Miles
posted by:
Sep 11, 2002 - Sep 22, 2002
This was our fourth day on the road but our first day of actual sight seeing.  We were excited about seeing the Black Hills of South Dakota and all the interesting landmarks that we have been reading about for over a year.   We were again blessed with a bright blue sky and cool temperatures.  Our leather pants and jackets felt really good in the chilly morning air. After breakfast we pulled out onto Highway 385 North, which would take us right into the heart of the S…

Unless you want to end up in a Jerry Lewis movie We're in Cozad, Nebraska. Not much time to update, we're running late. Eric is throwing the luggage back into the car. we're hitting the road again. Will write more soon. We are half-way to San Francisco!!

So last week I asked the people I knew here who have lived in Nebraska what there was to do in Omaha... they said NOTHING... except for the zoo and you need a full day to experience it, not 2 or 3 hours.  So I did some research and really didn't find anything... so I figured we'd get there and just mill around. We were driving on I-80 and I saw about 3 buildings popping up over the horizon.  Is that Omaha?  It can't be... I thought it was quite a large city... well, apparently…

The Old Market Historic District

A visit to Nebraska is not complete without going to the Henry Doorly Zoo.  Most of my childhood memories have been from the zoo.  It has grown so much over the years.  I remember the the Cat Complex was new and now there is talk about updating it.  Then I realize that it is about 20 years old.  I got to see the completed Gorilla Complex this time.  They did such a wonderful job.  But then again all their projects turn out to be a success.  I remember…

Nebraskas Scenery ;)

Ah! We hit the road again this morning at 10:30, hoping to have a better day today after a great nights sleep. We quickly cut over to Nebraska where we ended up on 20 hwy instead of 12 hwy but enjoyed it none the less. When we realized we were on the highway running parallel but below 12 we just cut back up where we were supposed to be and continued on. Our first stop was the Niobrara State Park in Nebraska. It was soooo gorgeous. It's a great state park that goes with the landscape and not a…

DAY 2 - Omaha Zoo
posted by:
Jun 03, 2007 - Jun 16, 2007
The first "real" day of our big 2-week road trip.  We went from our campground at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha to the Henry Doorly Zoo.  For 2 years we'd been hearing raves about the zoo and it was all true.  It was a beautiful zoo with well-planned habitats for most of the animals.  The primate area was extensive.  It was very kid-friendly (as a zoo should be) and my son particularly enjoyed the touch tank where he got to touch a small shark, ray, crabs, …

A whole park to myself
posted by:

A took the beautiful afternoon off and went hiking in Ponca State Park in Nebraska.  I got there a little late and it was mostly deserted.  First stop was the Tower in Time fountain.  The monument is to recognize the importance of water in the history of time and the natural history of the park.  Right after I took my picture, the fountain was turned off (I guess they were waiting for me). I hiked the Bigley's Ravine Trail that began along the Missouri River, up in the hi…
