Navimag Cruise (Puerto Natales to Puerto Montt) Vacation Guide
I have been working one season on board this ferry and I want to tell you what to expect:
First of all, it is not a cruise ship at all, but a simple RoRoFerry accomodated for passengers (up to 300). Cabins are small, food is self-service (tends to be a little cold), spaces to sit down and hang out can be overfilled during bad weather. The service members are professional and always try to help you out. The ship's bridge can be visited by daylight and you can ask all kind of questions to the officers.
The journey takes 3 days, navigating through endless patagonian channels and thousands of islands. It is a quiet journey, do not expect anything truly spectacular. Sometimes a small village being home to the zone's last natives (Kawesqar) is visited and in summer the ship passes by a glacier. An open sea area is crossed (12 hours) which causes some passenger to feel sick. Especially in summer whales can be seen during the trip, the possibility of spotting dolphins also exists.
Weather is often rainy and grey and can prohibit good views.
