There are a few things I learned as I surgically airstriked my way into Russia. It helps that the workers there generally speak some English, so no worries if your Russian isn't up to snuff.
First off, the annoying thing I learned once it was too late: Delta airlines does not allow its passengers to purchase liquor from the Duty Free in the airport as no liquids are allowed on board. You can buy on board the plane, but the selection is better if you buy on Russian soil. My advice is to buy a bottle or two, then include it in your checked luggage. This is kosher. I'm not sure if other airlines have the same policy, but I suspect they do - at least the American ones. Another thing I learned too late was that security only allows you to have one cigarette lighter (per person). I had two and contemplated getting a third the day before. These weren't just regular lighters, so it was hard to part with one, but I suppose it's better than none. The other thing is that the security checks are very thorough. I'm no jetsetter, but I've never been forced to watch my luggage being fondled so thoroughly. This is good to know in case anyone has any ideas about bringing things they probably shouldn't. I imagine there are always loopholes, but I wouldn't want to be the one to test that. Other than that, the boarding procedure is fairly simple and standard, if time-consuming. So, given the airport's distance from Moscow proper, I'd be sure to get to the airport three hours before your flight. Save yourself the grief of having to rush. |
