Places to Visit While on the Navajo Reservation Dec 31, 2008
The Navajo Reservation is located in mountains and the desert. Kayenta is in the desert, but has plenty of things to do, in an isolated kind of way. :) There are local restaurants with traditional Navajo food choices (fry bread and blue corn mush) and a couple of places to shop for local items (like boots and spun wool). I-160 will take you to the Four Corners monument to the east and put you on the way to the Grand Canyon to the west. Kayenta does have hotels (Best Western) and a little fast food (Sonic and Burder King). (Don't forget to see the Code Talkers Museum inside of the Burger King!) There is also a movie theater, a community center with a great cafe (Shepherd's Eye), and a little hardware store (True Value) where you can find most of what you may need (more than just the average hardware store). Day trips are recommended if you are staying in Kayenta, AZ. There is the awe-inspiring drive through Monument Valley, the trek through the Navajo National Monument, and hiking up The Toes (appropriate gear recommended for hiking on rock, including water). Stop by the gift shop in the Best Western for some local maps and books.
