I visited the Republic of Nauru by accident. I was a US Peace Corps Volunteer in the Republic of Kiribati and got stuck there for a couple of days when Air Nauru's only jet broke down. It was an interesting, if depressing place. Most of the island was decimated by the phosphate mining. With all of that industry gone, there is little left but deteriorating equipment and a few people. The hotel they put me up in was fine, and the beaches were pretty. Not meant for tourists, though - few stores and little internet access (there was a tiny and unreliable internet cafe).
