Naturkundemuseum Erfurt Reviews
Natural History Museum for this region Oct 25, 2013
Due to pretty terrible weather we were forced to look for an indoor activity. We had heard that this museum had been recently renovated, so we took a chance, and it was a good choice.
The exhibits are very well done and the layout of the overall museum is nice. The vocal point is a 14 meter 45 feet tall oak tree which was brought in recently around which the staircase winds itself. The oak was cast from the original tree which was 350 years old when it was struck down. The tree roots are the original.
You'll see local animals, plants, rocks, etc on display here. There are some interactive displays which are also very well done. My favorite exhibit was the one with life field mice. they were so interesting to watch. There were also life rats in another exhibit.
Don't miss the basement! The cellar room houses a ship replica which is supposed to be Noah's ark on which more exotic animals are on display. It's also in motion, so it feels like you're on a real ship. I thought this part was really neat.
I do recommend this place if you find yourself in Erfurt on a rainy, windy or cold day.
