Nature's Door Khovsgol Lake Reviews
Poorly operated environmental conscious gercamp Nov 10, 2012
N50°35'34.8" E100°10'57.5" This environmental conscious tourist gercamp offers cabins, a lodge and 16 gers with 4 beds each on the western shore of the Khövsgöl Lake. The view is great. A new extension to the north is being constructed. An English language teacher from Ulaanbaatar runs this gercamp, and most staff speaks English.
According to the Lonely Planet guide, the food in the restaurant is some of the best you'll get on the lake. No complaints from us. Everything is fresh, dried or canned food, because there is no refrigerator in the kitchen. The waiter knows how to serve the food for his guests.
The ger itself is very basic with 4 beds. During our stay for two nights in August 2012, two of our beds were worn down. The bedding wasn't washed and a bed contained the leftovers from a peanut snack from former occupants. Was this the result of an environmental, financial or work-ethical consideration? The stove is lit every evening and morning by staff. A power generator behind to office supplies electricity to a light bulb in the ger from 7 till 11pm. No switch is available in the ger, so bedtime is for everyone from 11pm. Recharging batteries is done during these hours in the office.
For all guests, 3 warm showers, heated by wood fire between certain hours are available, so plan carefully or queue up. Unclear is whether the solar water heating installation on the roof is working. Two outside cold washing basins are available. Everything is kept clean but maintenance is not done. The sauna is out of order and converted to a bicycle shed. Many windows are cracked.
So we were impressed with the restaurant, not so with the ger and not at all with overall quality of the camp.
