Only worth it if you are interested in dinosaurs Aug 21, 2011
The Museum of Natural History is in an old fashioned Soviet building and harbours a large collection of stuffed animals, stones and meteorites that all represent Mongolia’s geography, flora and fauna. This at itself isn’t that interesting, the main reason for a visit is the Palaeontology section which has some large dinosaur skeletons. The south of the Gobi desert has been a huge treasury since 1920, more than a hundred dinosaur skeletons have been found here. The highlight is a three meters tall tarbosaurus.

You are not allowed to take pictures anywhere inside the museum.

An interesting view of Natural History with Mongolian Flavor May 31, 2009
First some basics - Entrance fee was 2500 togrogs (less than $2 US) for adults, less for students. Additional fees apply to take pictures or video of the exhibits (I managed to sneak one photo of the

Tarbosaurus though).

The museum is spread out over three floors and features exhibits on all the expected topics, but many with a Mongolian slant. So in the ornithology section you get a lot of information on the birds of Mongolia. In the space exploration section there is a large exhibit on Mongolia's lone Cosmonaut.

The highlights are the paleontology wing with two large complete fossil skeletons and multiple other partial fossils and fossilized eggs. Another section that holds information on the Przewalski's Horse, an endangered horse native to the Mongolian Steppe.

All the information is presented in both Mongolian and English, making it an excellent and easy exhibit for most to follow. Well worth a few hours of your time.

This should not be confused with the "National" History Museum which is located two blocks south of the "Natural" History Museum.
