The National Museum of Denmark (also known as Nationalmuseet in Danish) is an extensive museum, that tells the history of Denmark. And while a good first place, to begin your trip to Denmark, it is definitely not essential.

The museum is organized into separate sections, according to different time periods and themes. I was only able to see 3 of them, so I will just focus on those.

Definitely start with the prehistory section, which mainly focuses that period within Denmark. There are prehistoric artifacts, which lead up to the Middle Ages. I thought this was a nice section, with an extensive collection of artifacts, with highlights including a golden Chariot of the Sun artifact and some stone circles and various weapons.

There is the Middle Ages section, which was okay. After a little while, it does seem to look the same, as it seems to be the same redundant artifacts. It is mainly crosses, altarpieces, and other objects found in churches from that time period, along with weapons. While far from being lousy, it is not the best. And if time is limited, I would skip it.

The best part is the Stories of Denmark: 1660-2000. Basically, going from the days when Denmark was a seafaring nation, to the end of the 20th century. There are a bunch of artifacts on display, along with replicas of rooms inside different types of homes with period furniture. Just unfortunate that I did not get to finish this section, but I think it is safe to say, this section is enough reason to visit this museum.

There are very good English descriptions throughout the place. And more galleries to see, like one for ancient antiquities, but I did not get to see that.

Admission to the museum is free, which allows you to make multiple visits on different days. And I would save this place either before the Copenhagen Card has been activated, or after it expired.
