National Museum of African Art Washington Reviews
Exhibition, Study and Conservation of African Art Jul 04, 2012
Like most Smithsonian Museums in Washington, the National Museum of African Art is FREE admittance. We toured it on the 4th of July prior to the fireworks in the evening. It was a last minute decision to go in after finding out the Smithsonian Castle was not a castle but an information center. At 100 degrees and high humidity, staying outdoors was not an option for us. Especially because we had a 5 month old in our company who is sensitive to heat.
The ground floor of the museum is actually the top floor in the sense that much of the museum is actually below ground. We entered and went through security screening and onto the information desk. We got a flyer and I, purchased a $2 information guide for all Smithsonian museums.
One floor at a time, we went through all 3 floors. The amazing collection of African artifacts and history within these walls left me wanting for more. A fascinating collection of African Art is Smithsonian's tribute to Africa. From paintings to ceramics, masks, textile, tools, costumes and accessories, it offers visitors great depth into what Africa is. Plan a visit, you will like it.
