National Geographic Museum Washington Reviews
Visit for Special Exhibits Feb 13, 2010
The main headquarters of National Geographic, the museum hosts special exhibits throughout the year such as the Terra Cotta warriors from China. My family really enjoyed the special exhibit--so amazing to see how well preserved the figurines were after so many centuries. I was also impressed by the upside-down metal diorama of the Grand Canyon running along the ceiling of the main hall.
However, we were not as impressed by the rest of the museum, mainly because it consisted entirely of two photography exhibits located in the building across a small plaza. The photographs were beautiful, don't get me wrong (Polar Obsession is fantastic!) but they did not take long to browse.
The photography exhibits are free but I would not advise taking a side trip to the National Geographic Museum just to see those exhibits; go when there is a special exhibit and buy tickets for that event.
Special exhibit tickets are usually sold in half hour increments. Visitors may enter any time during the thirty minutes following their printed times. Photography will most likely be prohibited. Audiotours can be rented but the exhibit will also have placards with detailed explanations of the items on display. I highly recommend buying tickets on-line in advance.
