The best museum in Greece Oct 28, 2010
Greece has a long history and many civilizations flourished in this land and left some extraordinary artifacts. The national archaeological museum of Greece encompasses 4000 years of history.

Although many ancient Greek artifacts have been transferred or illegally exported to other museums in Europe ,the Greek archaeological museum has got some unique masterpieces of Ancient Minoan, Mycenean, classical Greek , Hellenistic and Roman art.

Highlights of the museum are also the Anticythera mechanism which is considered the first computer in human history and the the realistic figure of an ancient Athenean girl which was sculptured after her well preserved skull that was found in a mass grave.

As a student i entered free. If i remember well the ticket cost 3 euros. I am not sure.

The National Archaeological Museum is the home of some famous items, such as the Mask of Agamemnon, statue of Poseidon, and Jockey of Artemision. My personal favorite was the room of Santorini frescoes. The museum is quite expansive but luckily we had our trusty Michelin Guide to point us in the right direction. There are many offering guided tours which are said to last 1 hour. We passed on this as we wanted to take our time, but if your time is limited, this seems like a good option because it is easy to get lost inside or miss something, as there is a lot to see. Great collection.
