Nice tour! May 04, 2011
As Naples has an extensive underground network of caves and aqueducts, this is a great tour to see them. You pay around 10 Euros I think, and the tour covers this sight as well as the Teatro Romano (see my other review for that).

The underground tour is rather nice. The area was mined since the ancient Greeks were around, and as the area filled up with water, it supplied the city as well. There was a great story about the water supply requiring a cleaner. Although the locals paid him for his weekly service, he was prone to dirtying up the water supply again if they failed to pay him! Also, the place was used as a refuge during the second world war. There are great reminders of this - from toys and sewing machines left around to the military uniforms which are housed in the small exhibition area above ground.

At other parts of the tour, the walkways are very narrow and it becomes rather dark and cold. The candles that are supplied for that part of the walk all add to the fun of the tour though.

The one hour tour is very good and fairly decent value for money. You will see nothing else like it in Naples so from that perspective, it's worth considering!!

Doing something totally different in Naples Nov 12, 2011
In Napels we took a tour "Napoli Sotteranea", underground Naples.

The tour takes you to an underground theatre and lot's of narrow, underground passages. Some passages are so small you can't get in with a backpack. That part you do by candlelight cause there is no electricity.

You also see some artifacts from World War II.

It's fun but not for you if you are claustrophobic. It's an adventurous tour for children too!

The tour costs 15 euro / 2 persons (adult + child). You can take the tour at different hours a day: 12.00 - 14.00 - 16.00. At weekends and holidays also at 10.00 and 18.00. You don't really have to book in advance. We went there and joined a group.

The tour takes about 1,5 hour. Don't forget to bring a sweater cause underground it's rather cold.

Fascinating tour of the Napoli underground Apr 13, 2010
Naples is riddled with caves and aqueducts underground, and Nappoli Sotteranea is the perfect way to see them. Our guide took us into a small apartment their orgaisation had brought and then excavated the basement of. You go into the apartment, roll back the bed to reveal the entry to the basement (used in WWII) then inside the basement they have excavated the backstage rooms of the old Roman theatre.

Back onto the surface, we delve underground again, this time into an ancient Greek aqueduct, formed when the original Greek builders were mining stone for building the city. During WWII this was used as safe housing for thousands of people, all living on top of 5m of accumulated debris from thousands of years of people throwing garbage down their wells. It was a fascinating tour, wandering through narrow passages using only our candles for light before coming out to an ancient cistern or the basement of a church.

The tour runs in English at 12, 2 and 4, and for small groups you just show up at Piazza San Gaetano 68 at the right time. For other language times call 081 29 69 44.

The Underground of Naples Mar 20, 2009
This is a must see location in Naples. It can be a little tough to find but once there you will see italian culture at its peak right around the entrance of the tour.

Tours are run at 12, 2, 4. On the weekends they run two extra tours at 10am and 6pm. Thursdays they run a later one at 9pm.

The guide takes you first to the remains of a Greek Amphiteater and shows you how Napoli has actually grown on top of the old greek culture. You start in a bedroom...with a secret entrance to the theater.

From there you go down below, to the Roman aquaducts. You learn how these were maintained, and just how many uses these caves have had over time.

While most of the tour takes place in wide open and well lit caverns there is one point when you must remove any backpacks and hold a lit candle in front of you to squeeze thorough to get to a great example of what a well looks like from the bottom.

This tour is highly recommended and a bargain compared to many other sites.
