Nice frescoes, catchy stories May 02, 2011
The cathedral of Naples has been around since the thirteenth or fourteenth century, and makes for a great visit while you are in Naples. Although it’s fairly central, it’s still pretty tucked away and I thought this was quite unique. Most Italian cities have their duomos smack bang on some prominent piazza! The interior has some lovely frescoes and also contains the tomb of Pope Innocent IV. One of the cathedral’s main features is the chapel of Saint Januarius, which is effectively a church within the church itself! The church houses a vial of his blood, which liquefies each time it is brought out, which is once or twice a year. There is some scientific explanation about why this is, but it’s pretty cool. Also, if the blood fails to liquefy, legend has it that Naples will face some disaster or calamity. This is a great church visit and not to be missed if in Naples.
