Napier is proclaimed the "Art Deco City" of the world, after it was re-built in the 1930's in the wake of a very destructive earthquake. The city was re-built using traditional art deco techniques, most of which are still preserved today. The main road along the water is called Marine Parade and there you will find accomodation for every budget, the National Aquarium (where you can see kiwi birds!), and the tourist iCentre. Napier is a good place to start on your New Zealand wine tour because the Hawke's Bay region is home to some fabulous wineries!

I am always drinking NZ wines back home so naturally, I had to go and experience the awesome wineries of the Hawke's Bay region while on the north island. From Hamilton I went to the bus station and caught an InterCity bus to Napier. I got in at night so I couldn't see the surroundings and it looked like an average city. 9:00 am Winery tour with lunch. Today is the Ides of March and I’d heard (from someone on Travbuddy) that Eastern New Zealand saw the beginning of a new day before almost anyone else in the world. That, plus the fact that our room had a great view of the beach across the street, made it worth getting up in time for the sunrise.
