Namra Hotel Ladakh Reviews
Quaint Hotel in a Village in Ladakh Aug 29, 2009
Except Leh , the capital of Ladakh , the rest of the state is mostly small villages in the midst of nothingness . Tingmosgang is one such village amidst natural splendor .
This is the only hotel in this village called the Namra Hotel named after its owner Phunchok Namra . It was essentially part of a large ancestral house owned by the Namras .No one could have imagined tourists coming to this unknown village in Ladakh but then travelers are a breed apart , aren't they . Mr. Namra one of the wealthier ones in the village and with a flair of entrepreneurship hit on the idea of converting the major portion of his house into a hotel .
The hotel has this feel of living in a large house in Ladakh .. which is a great experience in itself . The hotel is set in the middle of fields ( the villagers have started growing some grains in the few summer months ) and surrounded by beautiful mountains . There is a warmth in the hotel of traditional ladakhi hospitality . A rear courtyard with apple trees , some traditional handicrafts is a nice place to relax and enjoy your tea / coffee or drink . They also put up a small bonfire in the evenings if you want to sit out .
The rooms are surprisingly comfortable , bathrooms clean and there is hot running water from a boiler outside the hotel . They provide you with candles since electricity is scarce and there is no backup generator ( which only adds to the real feel of living in a remote place ) .
There is a dining area where you they serve pre-fixed menus breakfast , lunch and dinner . There is traditional tea from Ladakh too to keep you warm . Fruit jams made in-house from fresh fruit are also served and available in packed containers too .
Walk down on the rear from the hotel and you find a gurgling mountain stream right behind the hotel . Just sitting in such lovely surroundings makes your stay at the hotel worthwhile .
The village is cut off from the rest of the world for almost 6 months when heavy snow closes down all roads to this part of Ladakh .
A great place to experience something unique for a day .. nothing else to do in this village except stay at the Namra and walk around the village .
