Nam Ha NPA Muang Sing Reviews
Trekking opportunities in Northern Laos Feb 09, 2009
If you honestly want to experience "off the beaten track" then a trek arranged in Muang Sing is not going to disappoint.
Lonely Planet (woefully out of date) tells you that treks from MS are all organised by the Muang Sing Trekking Guide centre. Not true. We organised our incredible experience through Eco-Trek who have an office in the market building. Eco-Trek is owned and operated by Pon and his wife who will soon open their new restaurant and hopefully will be offering cookery classes - she can cook wonderfully!!!
Seven months ago, a German couple went to see Pon and said that they wanted to get the "off the beaten track" experience. So he made the 4day/3night trek for them, cleared the route with the local authorities and since has taken one group per month on the route.
You are welcomed into houses by inquisitive, enthusiastic families in villages along the way who are totally unaware of the wider world outside of Muang Sing, let alone Laos! The walk takes in a slow boat on the Mekong, opium fields, rolling hills, views of Burmese and Chinese territory and multiple types of ethnically different villages.
Muang Sing is about 2 hours on a minibus from Luang Nam Tha, which is 9 hours from Luang Prabang.
If you make the effort, bring tubes of toothpaste, toothbrushes and soap for the families, balloons and paper for the children and a big memory stick for the hundreds of photos you'll take. Oh, and some toilet roll!
