Nakhal Overview

Nakhal is a small, but very pretty oasis village in the Al Batinah region of Oman. Batinah is mainly known for its coastal villages, but Nakhal is inland and serves as the gateway to some of the best mountain hiking in the Hajars, on the way to Jabal Shams and Jabal Akhdar.

Several hours from Muscat, Nakhal is roughly 30 km from Barka and one of three points on the renowned 'Rustaq Loop' - a circular drive past three of Oman's most stunning forts. Indeed, one of the Rustaq Loop's gems is Nakhl Fort, definitely worth a visit. A few kilometers beyond the fort is Nakhl Hot Springs, a shady spot where many locals congregate to picnic and swim.

Nakhal might also serve as your introduction to aflaj, the ancient Omani irrigation system. These water conduits are sourced from aquifers in the Hajar mountains and Nakhal is the first (though certainly not the last) village where these channels appear omnipresent.
