Nagasaki Overview

Nagasaki is the capital of Nagasaki Prefecture. It is located on the Japanese island of Kyushu.

Nagasaki was one of the first areas of Japan to open up to contact with the outside world so has areas rich in Portuguese and Dutch influence.

During World War II, the Americans dropped atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Approximately 35,000 people were killed instantly in the north of Nagasaki. Many more died later from the effects of radiation poisoning. Many monuments and a museum commemorate this tragic event.
