Visit the Nagasaki Peace Memorial Jun 15, 2013
The Nagasaki Peace Memorial is a short tram ride away from the city center. It is located near but slightly north of ground zero which is the exact spot the bomb exploded. The park features a 30 foot statue (9.7 meters) representing the desire for peace. The statue which looks a bit like Buddha has its right arm raised to heaven, while the left arm is held horizontally representing the wish for peace. There are many monuments around the park from nations hoping that no more nuclear bombs will ever be used against humanity. You will note the statues eyes are closed as it represents a figure that is praying for the souls of those killed in the blast. The park also has a Fountain of Peace that represents those who thirsted for water after the blast. Well worth a visit.
