NGV International Melbourne Reviews
The Largest Public Art Gallery in Australia Aug 17, 2011
The art gallery in Melbourne was often called NGV. There are two NGV, one is allocated for Australian art, hence called NGV-Australia, located very close to Federation Square (just within walking distance). NGV-Australia also well known as ‘The Ian Potter Centre’. The other NGV is also called NGV-International, allocated for international art collections. NGV International is located in 180 St Kilda Road (not too far from Federation Square, give 10-15 minutes walk). NGV was founded in 1861, and so far the largest public art gallery in Australia.
Having been to Melbourne Museum the day before, I decided to visit NGV-International. I was guessing that NGV-Australia would have large collections of local arts, some of which I already encountered with at the museum.
NGV International contains a large collections of paintings, sculptures, contemporary arts, fashion and design, photography from different areas around the world. Allocate at least 2 hours to explore everything in every floor. The entry for general exhibitions is free. NGV International open from 10 am to 5 pm (closed on Tuesday), opening time on public holidays can be checked on the website :
Meanwhile, NGV Australia open from 10 am to 5 pm , closed on Monday. Same website can be used to find the opening time on public holidays. Some seasonal exhibitions are held from time to time, and even open during the normal closing days. Entry fee may be applied for the special exhibitions.
