A Symphony of Blazing Bare Rock Jul 19, 2005

MYKONOS

According to mythology, this Greek island owes its existence to Hercules. In one of his 12 tasks, he killed giants and then threw them into the sea. The giants petrified and turned into huge rocks, forming Mykonos.

This dry, arid Greek island is situated in the middle of the Aegean and covers an area of only 85 square kilometers. However, its landscape has accurately been described as "a symphony of blazing bare rock, blinding white peasant architecture and numerous stretches of the most beautiful sandy beaches set against the deep blue background of the Mediterranean Sea."

Although one of the smallest islands of the Cyclades complex, Mykonos is the most famous, thanks to its:
• Natural beauty
• Gorgeous beaches (southern coast)
• Unique and attractive Mykonos Town (maze of narrow lanes, windmills)
• Pristine whitewashed buildings, churches and houses with blue roofs
• Scenic crescent-shaped harbor (Mykonos Town)
• Wild nightlife
• World-wide reputation as an A-list destination for the rich and famous

Many people feel that Mykonos is throwing its uniqueness into the sea by catering exclusively to tourists and their pocketbooks. Though some of these criticisms are valid, I thoroughly enjoyed my time in this enchanting Eden, as evidenced by my travel blog's photos and comments.

I also found Mykonos’ residents to be extremely friendly and flexible to the changes caused by the island's increased traffic. According to four natives I had the pleasure to spend time with over a bottle of ouzo; Mykonos has still managed to preserve its color and character.

In short, I highly recommend exploring this popular paradise :-D
