Being a travel budget junkie and food lover.. there are several nice things must do in Bangkok:

1. Place to stay: search Khao-San road: it is a backpacker area.. all backpackers roaming around. asically it is a block of street with lots of small motels and restaurant and much more street vendors. At night this road turned into a night street and attract even more crowd to come.

2. Temples: of course!... get yourself a Bangkok tourist map (available in hotels and travel agents) and enjoy several nice temples which are located in one area - Wat Arun, Wat Pho, The Grand Palace.. just walk around and explore the area.

3. Night Markets.. there are several night markets, depends which one to see... whether you want to see a night market or "a night market" :)

4. Eat where local eats: lots of street hawkers sells pork noodle soup, fried chicken and sausages and fresh fruits.. all almost cost nothing!

5. Shop - yes, definitifely: biggest place would be still Cathucak Sunday Market.. huge and beware, you can easily lost there! Lots of huge malls along Sukhumvit Road

6. try the tuk-tuk: small cart/pedicab, you name it.. that take you everywhere (bargain is a must!)

7. Roaming around with MRT.. hey taxi is cheap too here!

8. Explore the chinatown: they have a tour bus every certain hour (and free) - the guide explains in Thai, though. Traditional markets are also nice to explore, to see some strange stuffs:)

9. Outskirt Bangkok will be a nice place to go if you have a chance. Try Ayutthaya to see some ruins

Go to MBK shopping centre, it is the best place to shop. To me the Sunday market is too much of a hassle. Also Pratunam market is opposite the Indra Regent and a short taxi ride from MBK.

I also suggest you be very careful eating off the street, the locals are used to it, you are not, eat too much from the street vendors and you may pay the price. :) David

Might I added that should try in Ayutthaya, is Bang Pa Inn palace. You can drive around the palace by the golf cart. Actually quite fun!
